Abstract:

In this public lecture, renowned filmmaker and writer Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche (also known as Khyentse Norbu) will share his unique perspectives on adaptation, rewriting, and directing, drawing on his filmmaking experience. The lecture will explore how stories, philosophical concepts, and cultural values can be transformed into compelling visual narratives. Rinpoche will discuss the creative process of blending texts, philosophy, visuals, and poetic elements, offering insights into the art of translating complex ideas into accessible cinematic forms. In particular, Rinpoche will share how his recent film Pig at the Crossing attempts to illustrate the experience of bardo—a Buddhist concept that describes the transitional state between death and rebirth. With his distinctive approach to storytelling, he will reflect on the challenges and possibilities of adaptation across cultures and media, and how that may reshape the relationship between narrative, meaning, and medium.
